Barry Divola decided to become a full-time writer in 1989. He told himself he’d give it 12 months to see if he could survive. That was 21 years ago. So far, so good.
He is currently a senior writer for Rolling Stone, the long-time music critic at Who magazine, a feature writer and columnist (the popular Street Life and Hole In The Wall columns) for the sydney magazine, and a regular contributor to The Sydney Morning Herald and The Sun-Herald, where he specialises in popular culture and travel.
Barry has published three non-fiction books (Fanclub, Searching For Kingly Critter, The Secret Life Of Backpackers), three children’s books (M Is For Metal, Never Mind Your P’s And Q’s – Here’s The Punk Alphabet, The Country And Western Alphabet) and one book of adult fiction (Nineteen Seventysomething).
He has won the Banjo Paterson Award for short fiction three times, for his stories “Nipple”, “Cicada Boy” and “Nixon”.
His fiction has also appeared in the anthologies Girls’ Night In 4, My One True Love, Your Mother Would Be Proud, Readings And Writings and Kids’ Night In 3.
If you live in Sydney, you’ve probably heard Barry’s weekly spot on 702 ABC radio with James Valentine, and his regular appearances on The Critics’ Forum with Richard Glover.
He loves Sydney, but if he could live anywhere else, it would be New York. He has travelled there 15 times in the last 20 years, and it still surprises him and inspires him.
