Just a short flight from Europe, Morocco is a world away in culture and appearance. Located at the northwest corner of Africa, bordered by the Atlantic and Mediterranean oceans and the Sahara desert, Morocco offers a rich and enigmatic environment. Now one of the world’s liveliest cultural playgrounds, Marrakech has an exotic history. Beginning as a remote trading post on the desert outskirts, Marrakech became a strategic French garrison, then rose to be one of Morocco’s greatest imperial cities.
A unique blend of north African colours and Saharan light, of Arab, Berber and European cultures, Marrakech is a city of mysterious and complex character that has inspired artists and writers from Matisse, Delacroix, Paul Klee, Howard Hodgkins and Jacques Majorelle, to writers Tennessee Williams, Paul Bowles, William S. Burroughs and novelist Esther Freud.
Marrakech is the perfect destination for artists and writers seeking deep inspiration.

THE RETREAT
The aim of this retreat is to be immersed in an exotic and vibrant landscape, to keenly observe the environment and reflect our responses in substantial works of art and/or writing. Daily excursions will take us in and around Marrakech – the souk, spice markets, gardens, mosques and significant sites – gathering visual material through quick studies, notes and photography.
A trip into the High Atlas Mountains will offer opportunities for vast landscapes and intimate nature studies. Material is brought back to the salon (studio) for analysis and development during workshop sessions.
Participants may then select favourite imagery to develop during the retreat with a goal to complete one or more works of art and/or writing during the retreat.
Venue: Riad Al Jazira
